Edinburgh’s latest independent coffee and sandwich emporium has opened its doors.  Owned by Sean Wood, Tollcrust is causing a stir with its rich-flavoured cuppas, healthy nosh and eye-catching interior.   The graffiti-splashed snackery near the heart of the city’s Tollcross, serves up full-bodied coffee from as little as £1 and prides itself on using locally sourced breads – […]

REVIEW – The Grind House Cafe, Newington

*****

The Grind House is one of many cafes in the university/Newington area which always seem saturated with students and young professionals.  I chose it because it had a table free, but turned out to be a gem of a place with extremely fast wifi. I had a turkey,  cranberry and salad roll with a side […]

REVIEW – Leo’s Beanery, Howe Street

*****

Leo’s Beanery is a new addition to the Stockbridge/Newtown area and is run by Marie and Joe Denby.  One of the main attractions for me is the furniture here, which has all been hand made out of recycled church pews and yew trees.  If the wooden pieces were for sale, I would have bought half the […]

REVIEW – Cafe Newton at the Dean Gallery

*****

Edinburgh Spotlight Recommended!

Edinburgh’s Dean Gallery is an understated gem of a gallery in the west end of the city, close to the larger and more well-known Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. It houses some important modern works, including a large body of Eduardo Paolozzi’s distinctive sculptures and other works, making it well worth a visit. We’ll […]

REVIEW – Word of Mouth Cafe, Albert Place

*****

The Word of Mouth Cafe in Albert Place is a gem of a place for a drink and cake, a cooked breakfast, lunch or dinner.  The menu caters for all tastes and does a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The seating is cozy and service friendly.  The menu is layed out in a book style with […]

REVIEW – Earthy Foods, Southside

*****

Earthy Foods on Ratcliffe Terrace are dedicated to seasonal, local and organic produce.  They certainly have a huge list of suppliers.  There is free parking on site for customers and the garden is slightly strange, but most certainly fun! A set of stairs leads down to the main entrance and although there is a ramp down […]

REVIEW – Breakfast at Baxters

*****

Baxters at Ocean Terminal was originally just a shop selling all their wonderful produce and kitchen wares, but they opened a wonderful cafe/restaurant within their premises.

REVIEW – Roseleaf Bar Cafe

*****

Edinburgh Spotlight Recommended!

I absolutely LOVE the Roseleaf Bar Cafe in Sandport Place. It’s cute, it’s kitsch, it’s quirky and best of all the service and food outstanding.

I made the good decision of reserving a table for Saturday lunch, this place can get very busy at the weekends, with good reason !

I have eaten here plenty of time before, but my dining partner looked perplexed as she was handed a copy of National Geographic, but it has the food menu inside it. The drinks menu comes within a small book.

REVIEW – Filmhouse Cafe/Bar

*****

The Filmhouse Cafe/ Bar on Lothian Road is a gem of a place, even for those not going to a movie.  I used the Filmhouse for a business meeting on a weekday morning. Open from 10am every day and serving food till 10pm  and drinks till 11.30pm and later on weekends – makes it a busy place […]
