The member of staff who helped me was really friendly and helpful towards me.
They had many items for sale including items on sale, my student discount card cant be used in conjuction with items on sale but I didn't mind.
I was in with my fishing mate for the first time as he usually comes here often.

I was surprised how big the place was and the good choice of products. Looking forward to going in again next week.

Just been to the Peacock with my elderly parents, it was so cold that they had to keep their coats on throughout the meal, whilst the rest of us had our coats on our laps. The radiators were on but the place just wasn't heating up.

The service was good and we were happy with the food but it's certainly not the cosy atmosphere that were remembered from the old Peacock and we actually though the colour scheme was very drab.

Hi,

I visited Edinburgh about two months ago now, and I have not been able to get it out of my head. I knew when I was leaving I would be back as I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I did not want to leave.
I am now planning on moving over there. I'm applying for jobs but I reckon I will not have much luck until I get over there.
Any tips or advice would be much appreciated!
Victoria, reading this has just made me what to go back even more!!

I want to say thank you to Edinburgh Spotlight for showing some faith in my review & has chosen to forgive/see past my misunderstanding & now needless frustration of their moderation. My mistake.

When someone acts unforgivably rude in front of my child I get quite defensive.
My last review really sums it up the best probably as it says a bit more in addition to the same comments said earlier but put with my genuine kinder wish that the store improves.

I can factually say that I have been a regular customer with the Edinburgh branch since the day its doors opened.
I have visited there regularly (if around twice a month is regular). Great selection of goods. Their own Hi-Gear make is inexpensive & good value as long as you avoid their tents!
My family & I buy from more than one section in the store due to our different types of outdoor & weekend activities.

I consider myself a loyal customer of theirs as their open day last autumn was welcoming & fab & since then we have always usually been up for a regular visit since late last year.
I am interested in giving non knee jerk reactions to shopping experiences, as a one off bad day in a shop does not sum the whole place up, so I'm afraid this review gives me no pleasure to write.

So here goes:
The early visits to Edinburgh GoOutdoors were always a nice experience.

Admittedley the staff were a bit baffled back then about product knowledge & store procedures but everyone working there seemed positive & helpful.
I developed a soft spot for the store, visiting more often than really needed to be honest as there is something quite relaxing about shopping on the outskirts of the busy town near the sea in a place that sold about 70% of what I need in life due to being into multiple outdoor activities. They even have toilets & a vending machine :)

But, I would say that each time I visted the store though, since around the start of the year it has been a more negative shopping experience each time, give or take a visit. Staff are still lacking in product knowledge (to sometimes dangerous degrees depending on the type of outdoor equipment one is purchasing).

Most members of staff are dying for to make a sale, but if there are any problems with the item or if it does not function as intended it is extremely hard to find someone sympathetic who has clout in the place to help you. There is this weird protocol that exists in the shop where it takes talking to 3 people or so to get a refund :(
Another frustration is their pick up in store service, where half the time your order never arrrives.

All the shop sections has their share of good & not so good staff depending on the day. Frustratingly a member of staff who is very friendly one day will be ignorant or even passive aggressive the next week you go there, clearly not remembering you from the week before.

The frontline staff seem increasingly more strained due to what appears staff shortages. I actually feel sorry for the better members of staff who have always helped me in comparison to the ignorant minority as they always end up apologising for the inability of someone probably most likely higher up in the company.

Sadly on rare occasions I've even personally witnessed open bullying which was extremely unexpected & have noticed this more than once when in with family members to realise for certain how we feel about this.

Plus staff morale has appeared visibly missing on more occasions lately than preferable. Although it only seemed visible in the stores infancy admittedley.
I wonder if the management is aware of this or if perhaps the management has resigned...as the store shows signs of mismanagement in more than one area I feel (c'mon Go Outdoors HQ, get it together!)

Some of the excellent younger staff are surprisingly professional, always looking busy, yet clearly unsupported to many a customers eye, especially in comparison to the less helpful staff who are usually the mostly older differently dressed ones, who usually stand about just watching or moody, generally bored looking while passing their time.
What a pity.
It's disheartning to see this, as most negative customer experiences one would historically read of would be the opposite of above, with the younger staff usually appearing vacant or less keen with the older ones taking the ships helm with a smile.

I am still very impressed with GoOutdoors prices overall (& need to always buy occasional Horse/Camping stuff anyway) so will for sure remain a loyal internet customer of theirs from now on. They run rings round the competition pricewise for sure!

But after an initially okay visit last week that ended with my child & I overhearing unnaceptable verbal vulgarities by members of staff (unaware we were passing behind them) I really feel this will be my last visit to the store, as it is becoming an openly negative place to shop, lacking in good manners & cohesiveness.

It is definately better they exist as a company than not due to the variety on offer. And I suppose if their shop gets passed its obvious difficulties (which IMO would be easily rectified by any other experienced customer respecting retailer), then it will help to revitalise a known socially challenged area in Edinburgh.

I do hope the store one day becomes a warmer, more stable & better place to shop for a pleasing family visit minus the frequent unexpected sour taste left in ones mouth.

I think the owmner/moderator for Edinburgh Spotlight must be running a scam or blackmail racket against employers like GoOutdoors, etc & not a serious or impartial helpful review site, as they are taking down my honest non libeleous or legally controversial review which only criticises the company in certain very important areas but still overall highly recommends shopping with them online. I even redid my review yesterday in a more sensitive light to be softer on a genuine worry I have about the store & again it was killed.
And without even emailing me to say why the review was killed? My review was not even as harsh as some that still remain. I'm bewildered & will avoid this site & pass on to others its inability to represent the public.

Nice that its open until 8pm. Although my wife still feels vulnerable leaving there at later times with the kids when I'm not with her, as the street lights are all dead outside the store which has been so since my first visit last Christmas. I actually spoke to the a manager bloke back then jokingly about it saying the street outside the shop felt a bit unsafe at night (which was not helped by small leg breaker manhole covers on the right pathway missing). he assured me both the street lights & the missing council manhole covers would be rectified by the New Year. But had to speak to another lassie manager last month about it. Again still not dealt with at this time. Most of the time we enter/exit by car but as said b4, when the wife is on her own with the kids she has to walk in/out as she does not drive and she just wants to feel safer if doind evening shops.
'Most' of the staff are nice. I've learned most of their faces by now & know the ones to avoid, lol. It is a bit annoying how much new staff they seem to get yet always somehow seem short staffed.
Contrary to above reviews I find the footwear good but maybe it was worse in the past perhaps.
Their hi-gear own brand is really good if only purchasing the non safety dependant stuff like fleeces/coats/basic outdoor accessories but have found essentials like their hi-gear tents to be very badly stitched/zipped/strengthened etc.
I'm happier the shop exists rather than not though. Merry Christmas :)

I can truthfully say that I have been a regular customer with the Edinburgh branch since the day its doors opened. I have visited there regularly (if each month is regular). My family & I are buy from more than one section in the store due to our different types of outdoor activities.
I am certainly only interested in giving a balanced non knee jerk reaction to the store in question, as a menber of the public. I am a loyal customer. I'm afraid this review gives me no pleasure to write.
So here goes:
The early visits were always a nice experience. Admittedley the staff were a bit baffled back then about product knowledge & store procedures but everyone working there seemed positive & helpful.
I would say that each time I visted the store though since around the start of the year it has been a more negative shopping experience each time, give or take a visit.
The ground level staff seem increasingly more strained due to what appears staff shortages & occasional open bullying.
I have personally witnessed this more than once when in with family members to realise for certain how I/we feel about this statement.
There was also frankly unacceptable verbal behaviour commited by members of different staff on more than one occasion of my shopping visits.
Some of the younger staff are excellent & clearly unsupported, especially in comparison to the less helpful older or differently dressed ones, who usually stand about overseeing or moodily passing their time. Positive staff morale has been missing for far too long now. I wonder if the management is aware of this or if perhaps a management change has occured...as the store shows many signs of multiple mismanagement in more than one department.
I am still very impressed with their prices so will for sure remain an internet customer of theirs from now but after an initially okay visit last week that ended with my child & I overhearing unnaceptable verbal vulgarities my members of staff on our way out (unaware we were passing behind them) I really feel this will be my last visit to the store as it is becoming an openly negative place to shop.

I have been shopping at the Edinburgh store since its open day last year & sadly nearly each time I visit (about twice a month) I have witnessed progressively worse treatment of staff by the people in the black shirts (supervisors I think). I have seen grown men employees swearing at other grown men in quite a menacing way & young women/men being loudly shouted at.
The last straw was someone in the footwear department, last week on my last visit talking openly of sexual conquests in my 3 year olds presence unaware of the customers around him.
It's a real pity as the people who serve me are positively memorable & usually ever so speedy, efficient & genuinely nice compared to the frankly lazy supervisory staff who deal out increasingly unrequired negativity. I have watch the overall vibe of the store get darker sadly.
There is absolutely no doubt though that price wise & value for money, that no one can even compete with GoOutoors in Granton, so I shall remain an internet order only customer of theirs from now on!

Sounds like a great night (love hungry hippos!) Your photographs capture it well. We ran a photography project for 11/11/11 where we were asking people to contribute up to 11 pictures to our Flickr group 'Museum Exposure' (http://www.flickr.com/groups/museumexposure) to help create a photographic time capsule of museum activity around the world on this one day. It would be great if you could submit some of your NMS photos to the project. Thanks!

I was heartbroken to visit the refurbished Royal Museum last weekend. You have ruined one of my favourite museums. There appear to be vast amounts of 'space' and only a fraction of the exhibits that used to be on show. Objects hanging from the ceiling are of no use if they cannot be seen up close with information panels alongside. It's all too gimmicky and modern. It must be my advancing years but I much preferred it as it was. And what happened to the wonderful fish ponds in the main entrance hall ?
