Edinburgh for kids

Edinburgh is a fabulous place with lots of all weather activities for children.
There is a huge selection of open green spaces and parks to run around in and burn off their steam. Arthur's Seat is available to climb and explore, the Botanics are pefect for squirrel spotting and in neighbouring Inverleith Park, the ducks and swans love to be fed. There are a number of excellent playgrounds for children of all ages throughout Edinburgh, the best being the Meadows which has climbing frames, swings and sandpits suitable for every age and is enclosed so no dogs can run inside the play area.

When the weather isn't the best, Edinburgh has a whole host of indoor activites for children, such as
Molly's in Ocean Terminal which also has an indoor BMX and skateboard centre. Still at Ocean terminal, for the more artistic children there is the Ceramic Experience and the fun Build a Bear workshop. Kiss The Fish is a craft studio in Stockbridge for children and in Marchmont there is the Imagination Workshop.
Out on the West of the city, there is the excellent Timetwisters and of course, Edinburgh Zoo which is extremely popular with children. The Budongo trail is a fabulous way for children to get up close to the chimpanzees and don't forget the daily penguin parade at 2.15pm
If the zoo is outwith your budget, then there is Gorgie Zoo with free admission which allows children to get up close to farm animals and is a good day out.
Other free activities for children include the Brass Rubbing Centre and the Museum on the Mound which has a million pounds on display. The National Museum on Chambers Street is an excellent place to explore and has a hands on science section where older children can ride a Formula One simulator or younger children can operate robots.
The Edinburgh festivals are very child friendly with shows and storytelling for all ages. The Edinburgh Fringe in August is perfect with the endless street entertainers. In April there is the annual Children's Science Festival and Imaginate in May 2010, which is an art festival for children.
Eating
There are some very child friendly restaurants in Edinburgh, such as Vittoria's with branches at George IV Bridge and Brunswick Street, Leith alongside their sister restaurant, La Favourita who has a clown between 1-5pm on Sundays to entertain children through magic and make them animal balloons. Zanzero in Stockbridge allows children to make, cook and eat their own pizzas !
