REVIEW: Colin Cloud – The Forensic Mind Reader

By Isabella Fraser

Colin Cloud – an offbeat, spiky-haired cheeky chappie – is a living Sherlock Holmes. For anyone who has ever dreamed of being Holmes, solving clues by looking at a person and proceeding to rattle off reams of obscure information about them, then you need to be taking tips from Cloud. This man is a skilled operator who somehow manages to do the impossible, but does it with such charm and aplomb that it does not become overbearing (which it could easily become, because let’s face it, no-one likes a know-it-all. Except when it’s Colin Cloud. We like him).

As the room fills up – there was a packed house – the Danse Macabre is playing in the background. Finally the seats have been filled and Cloud enters. He sets everyone at ease as he manages to banter with the Saturday evening, out-for-a-fun-night crowd – a tricky sell. There is much reassurance that we have not all been cyber stalked by Cloud to impress us today (he is happy for the audience to do that to him however – he hands out his online contact information). Those picked for demonstrations are decided by random members of the audience, yet time after time, Cloud correctly gives us information about the image we may have in our heads, what name we are thinking of, what word we saw on a page. Cloud even explains what he is doing and how he is doing it but we still cannot comprehend how this is possible.

Cloud is quick to point out he is not psychic. He makes his deductions (ahem) by using his skills in forensic science and criminal profiling – he even quotes Sherlock Holmes: “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear,” In explaining his talents. Yet, when he manages to guess the amount of money in one particular woman’s purse to the nearest 10p (although this miscalculation too is all cleared up at the end) he still pulls something out of the bag that would not seem real if shown on TV, yet live in person he accomplishes.

If you want to be amazed and genuinely entertained with Cloud’s people reading genius, then you should book while you can… that’s elementary!

Colin Cloud – The Forensic Mind Reader runs until 23 August (additional show on 20 August at 14.55) at Just the Tonic at the Caves at 17.55. Running time is 1 hour.
