If you’ve ever heard “All the world’s a stage”, you already have some acquaintance with William Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’.
The famous saying starts the ‘Seven Ages of Man’ speech in this romantic comedy, which is being presented by award-winning, Edinburgh-based Arkle Theatre Company in the elegant New Town setting of The Royal Scots Club.
Along with well-known lines, life-threatening plots, warring dukes, lovers galore and a cross-dressing heroine who might just be something of a tease, ‘As You Like It’ also involves a wrestling match. Director Danielle Farrow brought in actor, professional wrestler and stunt performer Christopher McPhillips to train the two performers involved, so that audiences can enjoy cheering on (or enjoyably hissing and booing) either the ‘babyface’ or the ‘heel’, as wrestling parlance has it and as their own preferences dictate.
‘As You Like It’ runs from 12th to 17th August at Venue 241, The Royal Scots Club, 29-31 Abercromby Place, EH3 6QE. The play starts at 18:15 and runs for 1hr 30mins. Tickets can be ordered by contacting Arkle Theatre Company or via the Fringe website.
Arkle Theatre Company also runs the Fringe at The Royal Scots Club, presenting Yasmina Reza’s ‘God of Carnage’ after each performance of ‘As You Like It’ and hosting other productions at the venue, details of which can be found via the venue search at Edfringe.com
