If you visited a different one of the city’s many varied and diverse bookshops each week, it would take you over a year. Unsurprisingly, Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature is graced with dozens of book retailers — 53 at the last count — ranging from the big national high street chains to quirky independent shops tucked away in basements.
Now, a new free iPhone app has been released to help locals and visitors alike find the ideal bookshop for their needs. The Edinburgh Bookshop Trail features an easy-to-use directory of all the city’s book emporiums, allowing you to view them by category (such as ‘second hand’, ‘crime’ or ‘comics’) or by proximity to where you happen to be using the app.
Each entry features details of the shop, opening times & contact details, a gallery of images and a useful map. In addition, a What’s On section shows an at-a-glance view of literary events taking place in Edinburgh that week, from creative writing groups to book signings.
As a whole, the app is a perfect package for Edinburgh’s booklovers. And those without iPhones needn’t worry — the trail is also online on the City of Literature website.
So, whether you’re on the hunt for the latest issue of Batman, trying to track down a specialist tome or simply wanting to explore the city via its many fascinating and well-stocked stores, the Edinburgh Bookshop Trail is a useful addition to your iPhone app library.
The Edinburgh Book Trail app is available on the iTunes app store here.
