We took to the ice in Princes Street Gardens
One of the most popular activities to do in Edinburgh over the festive period is to take to the ice in east Princes Street Gardens and have a go at ice skating.
Until 20th December, it costs £8.95 for an adult to go ice skating (inclusive of skate hire). We paid a visit to the rink yesterday and were impressed with the smoothness of the ice this year.
We recommend that you buy tickets in advance to avoid queuing.
The sessions on the ice start every hour, on the hour and you get 45 minutes to do your very best Torvill and Dean impression. There are skating staff on the ice to ensure people’s safety on the rink and we have seen them several times helping younger ice skaters gain their confidence on the ice.
A mixture of current chart music and Christmas tunes play in through speakers and at night, the disco lights are bright and there’s a party atmosphere!
We were impressed that the rink was cleared and cleaned at the end of each session, to ensure the best possible skating conditions for the next group to coming on.
There are no lockers to put your valuables, so it’s ideal to have a non-skater with you to watch your belongings (and take photos) or come prepared with a small backpack.
If you live in Edinburgh, try to avoid the weekends when the rink is inevitably busier with visitors. An after-school visit was very popular with our mini-spotlight team. The prices rise slightly after 20th December.
Compared with other choices as part of the Christmas Fair, we think ice-skating is pretty good value. Enjoy the views and you can have a hot drink and something to eat
Suitable for disabled? Yes. Disabled skating is available and there are ramps to give access and attendants to help with access. However, there must be a carer in attendance as the ice rink attendants cannot go on the ice with them. It’s also recommended that peak times are avoided for obvious reasons – Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons in particular.
