FRINGE PREVIEW – Meryl O’Rourke: Bad Mother…

Meryl O'Rourke: Bad Mother...

Meryl O'Rourke: Bad Mother...

Meryl O’Rourke is spending a last romantic morning with her husband before the Fringe madness descends when we speak on the phone (don’t worry, it was a scheduled call and we weren’t interrupting anything…)

“I’ve been going up to Edinburgh since 1993,” she says, “and it was just really an excuse for debauchery! Of course all that changed when I got married.”

“This year, I’m not going to be doing any drinking or any flirting; at least that’s what I’m telling myself at the moment.”

This year, Meryl is appearing at the Underbelly with her first solo show, Bad Mother…

“It’s about dealing with your parents’ crap before it becomes your children’s crap,” she says. “About how much we’re affected by our parents – I look at my little daughter with a sense of fear.”

“My parents both died when I was younger – the show’s about how with hindsight you can look back at what they did and said and think ‘what the hell were you thinking?’ Then exploring things like my mother’s obsession with celebrity; even how her first memory was of being attacked by Nazi soldiers.”

“I’ve tried to make sure it’s funny all the way through, though,” she says. “I want people to enjoy it – but maybe also think and learn something.”

“When I did the show once before, a friend said she’d found some parts of it very uncomfortable. But then she texted saying how much more she liked it after three days – it had been like one of those films which stayed with her. So I took that as a great compliment.”

“So I suppose the show could be described as memorable,” says Meryl, “but to be honest, I’ll be happy as long as I survive the Fringe and get out alive!”

Bad Mother… runs from 4-28 Aug (not 15) at 14:45 at the Underbelly. More details are on the Fringe website.
