The residents of Blackhall and beyond must have shouted out with glee when they saw the doors of The Surburban Pantry open (no website).
This much-needed eatery to the area has been warmly welcomed by the locals, especially since they are now open into the evenings (11pm) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The food is available to both sit in and take away, or perhaps you can just buy some cheese or a bottle of wine from the extensive collection in the deli.
We’ve sampled a simple breakfast here and can recommend the coffee (from £1.50) and the morning-foodie offerings. Returning for lunch today, we luckily bagged the last table amidst the relaxing atmosphere.
I was a little concerned how the haggis baked in seaweed on creamed leeks would taste for starter (£5.00) but the flavour combination hit the mark, whilst my dining partner tucked into her steamed mussels with white wine, rosemary and cream (£5.25).
For the main event, I chose the grilled smoked haddock and sauteed potatoes with wilted greens (£9.00) which tasted as good as any similar dish I’ve tried before in upmarket restaurants. My dining partner opted for a smoked salmon, rocket and cucumber sandwich (£4.00) which was served on delicious bread with the salmon tasting fresh.
Our plates were completely cleared and we considered dessert, but were completely full. Coffee starts at £1.50 and the tea served is Teapigs (£1.70) and both are served with shortbread. The Suburban Pantry is fully licensed and the wine selection is better than average, but we had the car with us today, so settled for tap water.
A quality two-course meal with coffees for £27.00 is a win in my eyes. It’s perhaps a little confusing as to what the owners are aiming to be in the long-run, but there’s no complaints from us as it stands – we like the mixture.
We’ve yet to sample the evening menu, but it looks like we will have to book in advance as word spreads around the neighbourhood about the good food and service.
