Mamma’s American Pizza Company in the Grassmarket have been serving up fantastic pizzas for 25 years now. This evening saw us return to help Mamma’s celebrate their birthday.
We also got to try out the winning pizza from a competition run by the restaurant owners Paul and Caitriona Duncan – which was to find a new pizza combination to put on their menu for the rest of the year.
The winning entrant was by David Waugh’s called ‘Gusto del Papa’ (meaning Pappa’s taste) and consists of marmalade, goat’s cheese and basil on a perfect pizza base. Slice after slice of pizza was guzzled down by those in attendance and we can verify that the winner’s pizza was an excellent combination of toppings that satisfied our tastebuds.
The runner’s up pizzas were so good, that they will also feature on the menu. Jayne-Leigh’s pizza was the All American – featuring cactus, artichoke, fried egg, proscuitto and garlic – and Simon’s BER pizza was topped with black pudding, poached egg and rocket.
On the regular menu there are over 40 toppings to choose from including the more unusual options of haggis, mackerel, marshmallow and chocolate alongside classics such as pepperoni & ham. Spicy and non-spicy tomato sauce is available, as well as gluten free options.
Mamma’s is a very family friendly place that’s popular with locals and tourists, making for an interesting mix of conversation inside the cosy walls.
In the warmer months, there’s outdoor seating to watch the world go by whilst choosing from the excellent range of food.
