Loudons, Fountainbridge

Loudons Cafe & Bakery

*Update – open NOW*

I’ve been following the progress of Loudons Cafe & Bakery over the last couple of months through their facebook page and twitter stream. The grand opening is scheduled for Monday 10th January 2011 at 8am.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of this stylish and modern cafe and can report that it looks fantastic and the smells coming from the bakery make me want to clear my diary for next week and move in.

Situated at Lochrin Square, Fountainbridge – Loudons aims to be a place for everyone to eat and relax. The premises are light, airy and reminiscent of Peter’s Yard, which is no real surprise since the owner used to manage the popular Swedish cafe.

There is ample room around the tables that seat 70 or so in a mixture of seating styles, which make this a perfect spot for parents with buggies (baby changing facilities are located on ground floor). Loudons is also fully wheelchair accessible with a dedicated spacious bathroom.

The free wi-fi is fast and reliable and for those having business lunches or doing some work, there’s the added bonus of being able to print out documents, saving trips back to the office. The separate take-out area is perfect for those with less time, with self-service options available.

The Food

The owner Chris told me that the food will be varied and locally sourced where possible. The bread and baked goods will be made on the premises in the huge downstairs kitchen (which can be viewed through a window). Loudons will be doing a selection of vegetarian food with gluten and wheat free options also available.

The coffee is supplied by Artisan Roast and the loose leaf tea is from the excellent Pekoe Tea.  Loudons will eventually be licensed selling local beers and a small selection of wines.

In addition to all this great food and drink, there are a couple of small retail areas selling teapots, crockery, soft toys and sweet treats. I spied that some of the cabinets were full of Rock Lobster chocolate which is handmade in Dunbar.

I can’t wait to visit next week and experience the fresh food, served with smile from the well-trained staff.

Of course, with any new business, it will take a few weeks to get things spot on, but Loudons certainly has the potential to rule the Fountainbridge area with this forward-thinking cafe with facilities for all.
