REVIEW – Cafe Ruby, Tollcross

Leven Street

Cafe Ruby is great for all meals of the day

I love Cafe Ruby in Tollcross and first visited on its opening day when the cast of Calendar Girls from the neighbouring King’s Theatre were sitting at the next table enjoying their food in between shows.

This family-friendly establishment warmly welcome everyone that walks through the doors and I’ve been back several times since with various family members, friends for afternoon tea and business meetings.

I love their pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, £3.50 and their porridge with fruit compote, £2.30 hits the mark on a cold morning.

I have also chosen the soup/sandwich combo for lunch, £5.50 whilst Mini-Spotlight members have filled up on toasties, £2.80.  There is an excellent range of homemade cakes and tray-bakes on offer and their afternoon tea for two is extremely good value at £9.95 as well as being delicious.

One of the Mini-Spotlight members loves coming here for a hot chocolate and scoop of chocolate buttons which are served in a dainty tea cup (as do I). The staff always say hello to her and ask her what she’s been up to with genuine interest.

Meeting over afternoon tea

Open into the evenings when there’s a performance on at the King’s Theatre makes Cafe Ruby a great option for a pre-theatre meal (BYOB no corkage) and you’ll never know which cast members you may bump into (both in and out of costume!)

My latest visit was yesterday before Jack and the Beanstalk and we devoured a bowl of soup, a quiche and a lasagne in one fell swoop.  All of them hit the mark on such a cold winter’s day.

I also saw that Cafe Ruby are now doing a kid’s menu for £3.50.  The offer includes a filled roll, a kiddies drink and a choice of two tray-bakes.

Babies are also welcome here, with excellent changing facilities in the spacious bathroom.

I’ve yet to hear the piano being played, but believe they sometimes hold music afternoons on Sundays.

Cafe Ruby has definitely made its mark on the Tollcross area.

Open Tuesday – Friday 11am – 7.30pm, Saturday 10am – 7.30pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm.  Pre-theatre meals with BYOB (no corkage).   You can find Cafe Ruby on twitter.
