The New Victoria project is of great interest to us at Edinburgh Spotlight and we are lending our full support to the project. Our roving reviewer Rebbeca Johnston was involved in last Friday’s meeting.
I met with the people behind The New Victoria in the nearby Greenmantle pub to learn more about the plans for the project. Having lived across the street from the building for many years, I am really excited about the prospect of having it reopened again, it was sad to see it close. The proposed plans look excellent, it is to be sympathetically restored as an arts venue. To be used as a cinema, theatre venue, available for hire for conferences and weddings and many other possibilities. The plans include three rooms with theatre style seating, one with tiered levels suitable for cabaret seating and other options, a foyer with old fashioned ice-cream parlour, a reception area and a bar with balcony.
We visited many local businesses to tell them more about the plans, provide information sheets, put up posters and leaflets where possible and generally guage the level of support and encourage more of it. The response was overwhelmingly positive, so many businesses were completely behind the possible reopening, people wanted to know more personally, find out what they could do to help and we had comments such as ‘I’m behind it 150%’. With such a positive response from local businesses it’s looking very good for The New Victoria Project. I will be doing all I can to support it and it seems that many other volunteers and local businesses will be too. There are plans to hold an open day for the local community to find out more about the proposed plans, due to be held on the 4th of December. You can keep up-to-date with what’s happening with the project on their website, view stunning images of the building and follow the project on twitter and facebook.
