REVIEW – ‘Foolish’ by Augustalia (single)

Originally from New Zealand, singer, songwriter and self-styled rock chick Hannah O’Reilly now calls Edinburgh home.

She has joined forces with guitarist Adrian Michalski, bass-player Gary Anderson and drummer Steve Galbraith to create Augustalia, a band treading a beguiling line between melancholic alt-country and Amanda Palmer-esque dark cabaret.

Foolish is the lead track from the band’s soon-to-be-released debut EP, the gloriously-titled ‘It’s Never Too Late To Ask For Your Knickers Back‘.

It begins with gently-strummed acoustic guitar lapping at its shores, before Hannah’s seductive vocals are born Venus-like from the water. Then, like being engulfed by a tidal wave in slow motion, the track gently sweeps you away as Hannah laments her addiction to a destructive relationship. If Foolish was a drink, it would be absinthe on the rocks. Make that a double.

As the sun slowly dips on the song’s horizon to the layered and lush musical accompaniment from the boys, Hannah’s crystal-clear vocals and mesmerising harmonies take on the mood of a fallen angel knowing she’s watching the sunset for the very last time.

We defy you to listen without at least one shiver being induced.

You can bask in Augustalia’s warm glow yourself on November 18th, when they release their EP at The Voodoo Rooms, supported by The Dull Fudds and Lee Patterson.
