FRINGE REVIEW – Guest who? Underbelly

Until 29 Aug (not 17)  2335 (0035)  @ Underbelly Cowgate

A chance meeting and conversation at the Udderbelly cow with a member from Guest Who?  led to this review which is produced and performed by the Maydays – veterans of the improv comedy scene.   Five members are selected from their experienced team each evening, in addition to the special guest.    The hour long show is a take on Whose line is it anyway?  complete with their very own pianist providing incidental music.

Opening with a re-construction of how two audience members met, the Maydays use  spontaneous stories and suggestions to create hilarious improvised sketches and songs.  There were four female cast members last night and one male, all of which contributed to the comedy routines.  The audience were asked to stand up and participate in a version of ‘Guest Who’ and by process of elimination, the special guest for the evening was revealed to be Nat Luurtsema who has her own Fringe show.

Words were randomly shouted from the audience to Nat and she had to invent a story containing each of  them.   Starting off with paraffin, followed by a haggis suggestion and finishing with b*****ks.  The Maydays then go on to incorporate these words in a variety of sketches and songs.

The quintet work together exceptionally well and their comedic timing excellent.  The lyrics  and dance moves that they perform on the spot had the audience in stitches and is one of the best improv shows I have witnessed.  The Maydays are certainly on a par with Paul Merton’s Fringe version.

The comedy is of course, downright silly, but a must-see if you are a fan of the genre.  The bonus to this show is that it’s different every night, so you can return as many times as you want and never witness the same show.
