Cabaret Whore Encore!

Cabaret Whore Encore!

In what is surely one of the best-value shows on the Fringe (i.e. it’s free), Cabaret Whore Encore! treats us to a parade of larger-than-life divas and laugh-out-loud lyrics.

Although it can be easy to forget, given the variety of the glittering quartet of ‘stars’ on display, this is a one-woman show from the versatile talents of Sarah-Louise Young.

From the Bette Midler-style fake sincerity of Bernie to the unhinged happy clappiness of Sister Mary-Ann; from the suicidal angst of La Poule Plombée to the delightfully dippy immigrant cabaret star Kasia: Sarah-Louise’s characters are memorable and often hilarious.

The songs are clever, funny and excellently-performed, with each character having a life of their own and probably capable of carrying a whole show. Kasia in particular is a fantastic creation, with her leotard-clad homage to the ukulele and her hilarious take on Eurovision. Between song banter also sparkles, proving Sarah-Louise is as able with an ad-lib as she is with scripted lyrics.

In character from the moment Bernie greets and seats the packed audience to the end, where La Poule demands money from the satisfied crowd, this is variety entertainment in every sense of the word and highly recommended.

Ticket information is available on the Fringe website.
