FRINGE REVIEW – Brazil! Brazil!, Udderbelly

7-30 Aug  1855 (2010) hrs @ Udderbelly

Brazil! Brazil! is a spectacle combining carnival, football and samba – all things Brazilian!  They have appeared to sell out crowds in Australia and recently completed a worldwide tour.  The show includes a martial arts and dance style unique to Brazil and known as Capoeira – all set off against a backdrop of talented musicians and singers.  Despite their professional appearance many of these talented stars have escaped the ghetto life of drug dealing and violence in their home country; their intention to show the under privileged that Capoeira can free them from all this.  There are also excerpts of storytelling interspersed with the dance and music.
The acrobatic displays provided by this martial art are set off by the beautiful music and vocals.  Beware if you are sitting in the front side rows, these muscular Brazilians get pretty close to your laps….then again if that’s what you’re after!
There is some inspirational percussion playing – look to the far left – as well as impressive traditional musical instruments.  Be transported from the feel of a smoky jazz bar to seeing the National Freestyle Street Football Champion show off his ball skills!  There is plenty of eye candy on display for both the ladies and gents.
All in all, this is a fantastic early evening hour of entertainment with something that will appeal to everyone.  There was a packed house this preview night, with many audience members giving the performers a standing ovation.  It is impossible to leave the inner purple cow without feeling energised by this performance.
