FRINGE REVIEW – Al Murray, The Pub Landlord’s Compete For The Meat

Until 28 Aug  1230 (1400) @ Pleasance Dome

Al Murray has returned to the Edinburgh Fringe with a  bargain £5 show in which the contestants of the lunchtime quiz can win an actual frozen chicken!  There are sausages for the runners up and ‘nothing but shame’ for the losers.

I bravely seated myself at a front-row table as part of a team called ‘The Plough’.  Two couples on holiday from England and a fellow Edinburger made our instant team complete.  Murray was warmly welcomed to the stage and he began a general chat with the audience – providing quick and entertaining banter for thirty minutes.  No-one was safe from his comedy one-liners and put-downs.

The Pub Landlord is definitely at home in this quiz setting, dishing out general knowledge questions with his own set of rules: “What was the worst film in the 1970s in my opinion?”

There were six rounds in total, interspersed with singing ‘thick and slow’ at the current losing team, the first of which was sent to the ‘sin bin’.  Murray had to expand on his ad-libbing due to a few marking and technical issues, but the audience were so engrossed in the fun, they barely noticed.

A couple of ‘crisp countdown’ competitions took place, with the four-way runners up place (including my team) being decided this way.  All the winners walked away with their frozen goods and large smiles across their faces.

A thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes where he integrated every single member of the audience into the show. Al Murray is on top form in this brand new format leaving everyone wanting to compete for the meat!
