Afternoon tea and cake
The Cellar Door Patisserie proudly takes place on George IV Bridge above the Cellar Door Restaurant, which was formerly the Olive Branch Bistro.
I have been here twice now, once for their excellent hot chocolate and chocolate brownie combo deal, which was nothing short of perfection.
This review is from a visit earlier this week when I needed some comforting cake! A warm welcome from the staff re-affirmed we had made the right choice. I asked if it was ok to just have tea and cake and she enthusiastically replied that it was and indicated the cakey goods in front of her.
All the choices looked mouthwatering, but what I like about this place is, that they have little samples of the cakes to try before you buy. Mmmmm, a tiny piece of vanilla cheesecake perhaps? Carrot cake? Chocolatey chocolate cake? I tried all three. The carrot cake (£2.50) was so heavenly moist and delicious that my friend immediately chose that option and I went for the more unusual choice of plum Madeira cake (£2.50). Coffee and tea were ordered and we retreated to one of the few sit-in seats on ground level and waited in giddy anticipation.
Contender for best carrot cake in town
We sliced them in half so we could experience both of our choices and the carrot cake was so perfectly moist with topping to die for – I honestly think it’s my current favourite cake in the whole of Edinburgh!
Plum Madeira cake
The plum Madeira cake was also delicious and baked to perfection. Despite the generous portion size with both of the cakes disappearing all too quickly.
Reading their website, it appears that these creations were made by their chef called Petra who has been flown over from Germany to produce the masterpieces we experienced, alongside a selection of chocolates and truffles.
No time to sit-in? All the goods on offer, as well as the hot chocolate and coffees are available to take away.
Full marks to Petra, full marks to the lovely waitress and full marks to the Cellar Door Patisserie. I’ve looked at their menu for the restaurant downstairs and will be paying them a visit soon to experience a whole meal, knowing that the dessert will be nothing short of exquisite.
Suitable for disabled? The patisserie is on ground level, with room to manourvre but the bathrooms are down a set of stairs.

This looks like a lovely place to have tea. My friends and I will order different cakes to go with our tea so we have a wide variety to share. The vanilla cheesecake sounds good.
It’s just as well Edinburgh is such a great city for walking with all these cakey treats to try. Another place to visit goes on the list of Cake-and-Moonwalk-Training venues!
