REVIEW – Lunch at 99 Hanover Street for 99p (+tuckshop)

99 Hanover Street

Unbelievably cheap lunch in the heart of Edinburgh city centre.

Updated January 2011.  This offer is still available between 12 and 2pm Monday to Friday.

Update February 27th

Even though the 99p selection still appears on the new menu, it appears that this offer is not available at the moment, so check with venue before going.

As I walked past 99 Hanover Street a couple of weeks ago, I had to glance at the sandwich board twice after reading the words ‘lunch for 99p’.  There didn’t seem to be any catch, even soft drinks were priced at 99p.  Intrigued (read nosey) I wandered inside with my friend and had a lovely lunch where the quality of the food was faultless despite the bargain price.  We took our time and enjoyed some wine with our meal (not 99p) which is maybe where they begin to make profit.

Today I ventured back for the second visit so I could give it a proper rating and am pleased to report that the food quality and service came up trumps again.

The menu changes weekly so you don’t have to repeat your choices.

Bargain lunch

Today I chose the black pudding and red onion sauce for 99p, the coley with curried carrot for 99p and a cranachan dessert –  for you’ve guessed it, 99p.

Black pudding and red onion jam

Coley and curried carrot

Cranachan parfait

The black pudding and red onion sauce was a very tasty starter and the coley and curried carrot was heavenly in both taste and size.  The cranachan hit the mark on such a sunny day and I relaxed for a while longer in the sumptuous surroundings of the bar.

99 Hanover Street is buzzing at the weekend with a DJ, but this current lunch deal makes it hands down the best value food in central Edinburgh.

Wifi is available, so you can use the bar work in, or just watch the world go by from the huge arm chair in the front window.

Suitable for disabled?   Yes, ground level access and fully accessible toilet on ground floor.

Updated January 2011 – 99 Hanover Street have also started a tuckshop.  What a great idea!  See the menu below.
