REVIEW – Bakehouse, Victoria Street

The Bakehouse Company

Oct 2010 – This premises has now closed.

I love the Bakehouse on Broughton Street and was over the moon when a more central branch opened up in Victoria Street last summer.

In this branch, you order your food downstairs and then are responsible for taking it up the stairs to the seating area yourself.  I have visited this branch of the Bakehouse twice now and have found the staff to be unhelpful when faced with the decision on what to have and hurrying the order up.

This review is for a simple visit out of the rain for coffee and cake with my mum.  We decided not to perch on one of the window stools to overlook Victoria Street and passing pedestrians, but chose a table which turned out to be wobbly, as was its’ neighbour.  Half way through my large pot of tea, which is served in silver tea pots and on a beautiful silver tray, I needed the bathroom to find out that they were ‘out of order’.  I know that incidents shutting bathrooms can occur at any time but would have liked a sign at the bottom of the stairs telling me there were no working toilets before purchasing food.

I finished my tea and cake quickly, as I needed to find a bathroom somewhere else on the street.  The carrot cake is superb and one portion is big enough for 2 people (even me!)

Generous portion of cake

Can’t fault the food here and the prices are good for the middle of the Old Town, but having to negotiate steps with hot teas and plates yourself doesn’t appeal to me.

Suitable for disabled?  Takeway only as all seating is up a flight of stairs.
