Waterstone’s in George Street is one of my favourite bookstores in Edinburgh. I like the layout and have always found the people who work here really friendly.
It is staffed by a number of genuine book lovers who have an excellent knowledge of both fiction and non-fiction and an enthusiasm to rival that of any independent bookseller.
Althought I love getting a bargain book on Amazon, you can’t beat the feeling of browsing a shop and reading a few pages to make sure it’s the right choice.
Sometimes, I have come here to find a rare book and the staff have always endeavoured to locate any one I’ve been looking for. The knowledge they have is brilliant and if Waterstone’s don’t stock or are unable to order it, then they will suggest where you might be able to buy it.
Waterstones has put an increasing emphasis on bestsellers and promotional offers in recent years, trying to compete with Amazon prices. This store also includes a well stocked Scottish and Edinburgh section, containing many works by local writers, in addition to the broad range of general fiction.
They also sell cards and moleskin products and you can of course by book vouchers which come in the form of a gift card these days. There is a Costa Coffee shop on the premises if you wish to refresh yourself with a light snack and a drink whilst perusing your new purchase.
Suitable for disabled? The access is on ground floor and there is a temperamental lift you are allowed to use, but the staff are more than happy to help bring any books that you require from the lower ground floor.
