Esq Barbers
I used to live in Bruntsfield, and visited Esq Barbers since it opened in 2003. It’s clean, stylish and reasonably-priced, but the thing that makes it stand out is the cheerful, chatty manner of the owner, Kenny. A well-connected people person, Kenny’s got a story about everything, and is bound to have a ‘friend of a friend’ who he can put you in touch with if you’re on the lookout for something.
The quality of the hair cutting is equally high. Kenny and an assistant, who helps out on busy days, take time and care over your cut, making sure you’re happy with it before they finish. The usual range of Fudge and American Crew products are used for styling and I’ve never seen anyone have a haircut here who’s left unhappy – or, unless they’ve specifically asked, looking like Krusty…
ESQ is small, with four chairs and is very popular with locals and pupils from the nearby schools, so you’re encouraged to book on 0131 228 2024.
The best compliment I can give it – and the reason for the ‘recommended’ rating – is that I moved out of the area years ago, and after having tried several barbers in different parts of town, I now make a point of returning here every time I need a cut.
Disabled access: Yes, the shop is on the ground floor with easy access from the pavement.

[...] REVIEW – Esq Barbers, Bruntsfield [...]
I second everything the reviewer said about ESQ Barbers. Kenny has been cutting my hair in excess of 15 years and it always done to a very high standard.
In fact I like it so much 3 generations of my family now get our hair cut there!
Happy to confirm both these comments.
Fantastic review! I can also vouch for everything that has been said. Other than the fact that I used to live in Barclay Place before moving to Stewart Terrace, my experience of ESQ has been practically the same.
I first bumped into Kenny back in 1998/99 when he worked at another local barber which I frequented regularly. This was pretty much down to the banter between Kenny and his side kick who used to rent the seat next to his as well as the excellent quality of cut at a decent price.
When Kenny first opened ESQ, unsurprisingly it has located in a nice part of town (Bruntsfield) fairly close to his regular haunt (Montpelier) and it was decorated to a high standard, which would not look out of place in a Hugo Boss shop.
If you happen to have booked an appointment on a Saturday afternoon, don’t be surprised if Kenny takes a few minutes to take in the scores on his flat screen TV and offer you a complimentary bottle of beer from the fridge.
Kenny also usually always has a big jar of Chupa Chup lollies for the kids, even the big ones like me so don’t be shy and asking for one as well as a good range of magazines and the daily newspapers for his loyal customers to enjoy while they wait.
I now live in Dunblane and make every effort now to come back into Edinburgh to have my hair cut my Kenny. At far as I am concerned no other barbers cut if for me and my wife can tell immediately when Kenny has cut my hair – A man’s hair cut isn’t just a hair cut when you have had it cut by Kenny … It’s a work of art that makes you feel great about yourself!!
Last year I became a dad and my son already has a full head of hair. When it’s his time to have his first cut there is only one place I will take him to and that’s ESQ. Having had my hair cut by Kenny for over 12 years I have not hesitation that in another 12 years both me and my son will still be getting our hair cut by Kenny.
If you have not had the pleasure of a wonderful hair cut by Kenny or one of his charming assistants, I would recommend that you give Kenny a call on 0131 228 2024 to book an appointment today.
