REVIEW – Falko Konditormeister, Bruntsfield

Bruntsfield Place

Having had a main course lunch at a nearby restaurant, my friend and I chose to indulge ourselves in dessert at Falko (Konditormeister).  This German bakery makes delectable sweet cakes and a wonderful range of breads.

I have eaten here three times now and the service has been both good and bad.  You order at the counter (which is not obvious to new customers) but take a seat and have your drinks and food served to your table.

The place is extremely popular with locals and visitors who have made the worthwhile journey up to Bruntsfield, so it’s not always easy to get a table.  There is seating outside all year round and even in the winter sunshine, makes it possible to enjoy the roadside cafe experience.

The pricing on the cakes is not always obvious and for the two cakes and two drinks we ordered, totalled £11.50.

They do a good selection of cheese and vegetables which work well with the fresh bread for a light meal alongside a variety of soups.

My friend opted for the strawberry tart which is one of the many cakes on offer which are baked daily on the premises.

The cake was absolutely faultless and every mouthful was devoured.  I opted for a chocolate cake which wobbled as it was served as it was so fresh and light.  Again, I cannot fault this masterpiece of chocolate heaven.

Chocolate heaven

Falko do have a wide selection of loose leaf teas and I chose a pot of almond tea which was sweet and refreshing.  My friend opted for a good strong coffee, which hit the mark for her.

Falko have a stall at the weekly farmer’s market in Castle Terrace on Saturdays and their goods literally fly off the table, so get in early.

As I said, the service can be mixed and there is a quick turnover of tables here, so not a place to linger for long unless you order more to eat and drink.  With so many choices available, that wouldn’t be particularly hard.

Suitable for disabled ?   Yes, it’s on the ground floor.
