Peters Yard at the Quartermile (or Middle Meadow walk for old Edinburgers) is a wonderful Swedish bakery and coffee house. There is an on site bakery, making the crisp breads, pastries and artisan bread for sale to eat in or take away.
You can find out more about the history of Peters Yard here.
I visited around 11.30am one morning after an early start to the day, so had already had breakfast, but wasn’t ready for a full lunch yet. This is where Peters Yard is perfect, there’s something for all sizes of appetites. They do soups, sandwiches and salads for lunch with choices such as crayfish, pastrami or more classics such as cheese sandwiches and ham ones.
I opted for their breakfast basket with a selection of breads, cheese and jams, £4.20.
What a wonderful selection of crisp bread, 3 huge door stop sized slices of bread, cream cheese, butter and jams.
I made my way through the basket, washing it down with a lovely pot of herbal tea.
I had some cream cheese on the crisp bread, with the rest of it on a slice of bread, topped with the cheese. The other two slices of bread were eaten with the butter and a jam on each one, which I believe to be lingonberry and arctic cloudberry.
By the 3rd slice of bread, I was feeling my stomach fill up – this really is a perfect early light lunch or enough for 2 people having breakfast. There’s a lovely atmosphere in Peters Yard with a mixture of people streaming through the doors.
The seating is comfortable with a mixture of window tables, tables for 2 and one big long communal table. They stock a range of other Swedish goods and tea pots for sale alongside the loaves to take out.
There is an ‘honesty’ station for commuters who just want to nip in for their coffee to go, pouring it yourself and leaving the money in a tin. The selection of pastries on offer are mouthwatering, making it perfect for an afternoon coffee and cake.
Peters Yard is open during the week from 7am till 6pm and from 9am till 6pm at the weekend.
Edinburgh Spotlight will always pop in here when near the Meadows and in need of a drink and food. A great addition to the Edinburgh food choices.
Suitable for disabled ? Yes, all on one ground level, also seating outside.
