Lothian Region Transport (LRT) are the largest bus operator in the city.  The other companies operate to places in Fife, West Lothian and the Borders etc.  All details can be found on the council’s website

Single adult tickets on LRT buses are £1.20 and are only valid for one bus journey.  If you need to get 2 buses, then you will have to purchase another ticket or go for the more economical day saver ticket for £3 allowing you to jump on and jump off as many buses as you want.  This can often be a great way for tourists to see the city (bus does not include sight-seeing, airport or night buses).

A child single fare is 70p and a child day ticket is £2.40 so a child would need to be making over 4 journeys to make it financially worth it.  Scottish National Concession Card Holders are free at all times.  If you are working in Edinburgh it may be worth your while getting a Ridacard – all details available HERE.  LRT buses do not give change, so try to get the right coins ready.

LRT now boast that ‘every bus, every day has easy access’ which is great for wheelchair users and people with prams etc.  More details can be found HERE

Lothian are in the process of rolling out their BusTracker  service. This provides bus service information in real time. Electronic signs are being installed along major routes, showing the wait time for the next bus on each service at that stop. An example is shown below.

Online, it’s possible to view the information for every bus stop in the city, not just those stops with electronic signs. Every stop has a unique 8 figure code, which are listed on the website and also displayed at the stop. You can access Bus Tracker via a mobile phone.

Edinburgh has a fantastic bus service, often quicker than car due to them getting priority in one of the many greenways in the city.  There are also no parking worries and it’s environmentally friendly.  The added bonus in the morning is that you get a free copy of ‘The Metro’ to read on your journey.

Full routes and timetables available at LRT’s website

  1. W. Coleman says:

I have been trying to find an address to send a vote of thanks for a retuned wallet complete with money ; bank cards and most importantly my bus pass which I treasure.

There was also the way in which your drivers managed through the terrible weather conditions recently and they have my admiration and gratitude for their services. Please pass this on to those whom this may concern.

    Regards,

    Bill Coleman.
