Blackness Castle is one of Historic Scotland’s many castles which are a stones throw away from Edinburgh.
Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons, Blackness was never destined as a peaceful lordly residence for Royals, it was a fortress and a prison.
Full history about the property can be found HERE. It can make a good half day trip or if you combine it with the nearby Linlithgow Palace, a full day trip.
Children under 5 go free to all of Historic Scotland properties, but you may wish to purchase a membership for the year if you are going to visit more than a few.

Approaching Blackness Castle
Admission Prices all year are – Adult £4.20, Child £2.10, Concession £3.20, but check website for opening hours, as they are shortened in winter or in adverse weather conditions.
One of the things I like about this Castle is that you can explore it freely and climb up stairwells and are encouraged to do so. You get magnificent views over the Firth of Forth and over to the Forth Bridges.

Looking back at Castle from water pier
There is plenty of information on display and lovely grounds to sit in with a picnic if you so wish. The shop sells gifts, but there is no cafe.

Suitable for disabled ? Not really. Although the website says that it’s difficult for wheelchair users, I would say it’s pretty much impossible as you need to go down and up stairs to get into the castle and then there are huge formations of rock within. All the halls worth seeing are up narrow staircases. No disabled toilets either.
