Tonight I had the delight of eating at Mezbaan South Indian Restaurant in Brougham Street, Tollcross.

Their website is HERE and you can also find them on Facebook, twitter and trip advisor reviews of the restaurant are HERE (currently #9 in Edinburgh !)
I had wanted to try this place for ages and found that an author of a blog I read had eaten there and loved it, therefore I was sold. Her post about Mezbaan is HERE. Thanks Alice
All food served is halal and it’s BYOB
For starters we had – King Prawn Mango Puree Puffy whole wheat bread with prawns cooked in mango sauce. £6.50

My friend said it was simply divine ! I am allergic to shellfish, so couldn’t try it
It was a very reasonably sized portion for a starter.
Murgh Mirch Kebab
Breast of spring chicken de-boned, then marinated in yoghurt tandoori spices coated with a sweet chilli sauce and cooked in tandoor. £4.95

I absolutely loved this starter – so flavoursome (with a wee kick to it) and again, good sized portion. Thankfully we were served a jug of iced water to help cool down my throat
For mains we had,
Alphonso Chicken Delicately spiced fillet of chicken cooked in mild cream and smooth mango sauce. £9.95
Lamb Kotyam Lamb marinated in yoghurt overnight, with desiccated coconut and cooked in lentils. £9.95 with plain paratha and steamed rice.

Having had a starter, the rice was big enough for 2 people. The mango chicken was simply wonderful
I could have eaten 2 more dishes of the stuff. The chicken was soft and tender nad has to be one of my all time favourite dinner dishes, which is saying something !
The lamb dish was also wonderful, stimulating all parts of my palate ! It wasn’t spicy, just really flavoursome and the lentils worked well.
I really had no room left for dessert, so didn’t look at the menu to see what was on offer.
I am torn between my usual Indian restaurant – Pataka at Causewayside and this new one to my list. Their menus are different, so I will be alternating in the future to work my way through the menu at Mezbaan
The food is highly recommended from me.
Suitable for disabled ? The restaurant is on ground level, but unfortunately the toilets are down a steep set of stairs.

it’s a lovely restuarant isn’t it? Thanks for the reminder…
The food is great – I can’t wait to go back !!
Aww- I’m sorry my recommended favorite was a shellfish dish! Glad you enjoyed it! That mango chicken sounds great.
I love the place! so friendly and love the mango lassi
My daughter and I had lunch here and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Busy for lunch time but food and service very good. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends.
I, with my partner, had the misfortune to ‘dine’ at the Mezbaan last night, 20th September 2011.
I had bought a voucher on Groupon as a treat for my partner, himself an excellent cook. The voucher value was for £62.55, I paid £24, and we did wonder how we could possibly eat that much food in one sitting. However, our fears were misplaced as we didn’t have enough food to feed a child let alone 2 adults. There was no choice in what we had to eat and what we had was almost inedible. We arrived at the Restaurant for a 6.15 booking and after ordering drinks and glancing at the proferred menu, although why this was given to us I don’t know, perhaps to further ‘rub salt in the already seeping wound’!! By 6.30 we had finished eating, the food was served on a cold plate and was brought all at the same time. There were dishes the likes of which we had never seen or tasted before and henceforth never will again. The Chicken Goa and Coconut Rice wouldn’t have filled the smallest of birds, 4 tiny pieces of chicken and a small handful of rice to be shared between us. We actually joked about leaving at the end of the meal and going for a Chinese – we could have eaten one so empty were our bellies!!!
I spoke with the staff, the manager being off that evening, and complained however a brick wall would have been more responsive.
I urge the curry loving people of this city to avoid at all cost this dreadful restaurant. Buy a packet of curry sauce mix, chicken breasts and a packet of heat in the bag rice you will save yourselves a fortune and at least enjoy what you are eating.
I will be contacting Groupon to lodge a complaint and hopefully ensure that this sham never happens to some other unsuspecting diners. However, if you think tepid, insipid, starch laden food is your idea of a perfect night out then this is the place for you!!!
I went to Mezbaan on last saturday. I had chicken chettinad and waji ali.i really enjoyed that.there we will get the real indian food.really tasty.I liked everything ,good serviceand very good food.i will go back there again…………….
I told my friend that she MUST have it and she loved it and I loved the look of it !
