The Nepalese Gurkha Restaurant at 128 Morningside Road, Edinburgh, EH10 4BX (0131 447 8114) was recommended to me by a friend. Anything involving food means it’s worth a try, so I popped up there for lunch to find that they only do their ‘express menu’ at lunch time and not their extensive normal menu.
They charge a very reasonable 5.95 for 3 courses, but I am not convinced that the food is as good at lunch as it would be in the evening. The restaurant is quite small but has that nice cosy feel to it and was pretty busy for a Monday lunchtime.
This was the menu that we had to choose from
I opted for the garlic mushroom pakora which were delicious and we were given an array of sauces and pickles to accompany them.

I then had the chicken curry with chapatis

The curry was very tomato based and I had I known this, I would have opted for something else. I guess I was expecting a creamy dish, but it was good and a fair sized portion. Having travelled extensively throughout Asia and other rice eating countries, and eaten enough rice for a lifetime, I sometimes prefer to go for something to dip into the dish. The chapatis were good and we both got 2 each.
The service was ultra quick, so we had to stall almost before we ordered dessert. I opted for the banana fritter and ice cream

An interesting colour of fritter to say the least but it was delicious, but the ice cream was basic.
I think we were in and out within the hour, but for 5.95 I was most impressed. I looked forward to trying this place in the evening as the full menu looked delicious – some really nice Nepalese dishes.
Suitable for disabled ? Yes, on even ground access and bathrooms on same floor

Yeah,
I went for a dinner there once. I had rice and curry, i was pretty content with the taste.
I look forward to trying dinner there as the lunch menu really is express.
Food pretty good in the evenings although a little salty. Portions huge!
Still not managed to get back there in the evening yet, but glad to hear the portions are good ! Can’t be doing with half empty plates
